Inviting or Extending an International on a J-1 Visa
Inviting a J-1 visitor:
To invite an international academic visitor on a J-1 visa, the human resources representative of the host department needs to request that the ISSO prepare the DS-2019 request form. You may either obtain a hard copy of the DS-2019 request form at the ISSO or download it here.
Extending a J-1 visitor:
If you are a human resources representative extending the stay of a J-1 exchange visitor who is already here, download the J-1 scholar extension request here.
Transferring a J-1 visitor:
To transfer a J-1 scholar from another institution to Cornell (transfer-in), please complete the J-1 Scholar Initial Request Form, including the Transfer-In Form on page 5.
To transfer a J-1 scholar from Cornell to another institution (transfer-out), please download the J-1 Scholar Transfer-Out Form and return it to the ISSO once all sections are complete.
After you have the request form, please follow the steps:
STEP 1: Fill out the appropriate form and return the form to Exchange Visitor Program via campus mail, ISSO, B50 Caldwell Hall.
STEP 2: After the ISSO receives the request form, we will prepare the DS-2019 form. If it is an initial request, we will send it directly to the visitor, along with the following: "Coming to Cornell" informational brochure which contains housing contacts, instructions on how to obtain the J-1 visa and an eplanation of the health insurance requirement. If it is an extension request, we will email the J1 visitor to come to the ISSO to pick up the new form.
STEP 3: For initial visitors, the DS-2019 form will enable the visitor to secure a J-1 visa from the US Consulate.
STEP 4: The initial visitor enters the US using the valid passport, J-1 visa stamp, and Form DS-2019. All newly arrived J1 exchange visitors should check in at the ISSO.
